After years of work and a £500,000 investment, The Mall in Barrow was yesterday officially opened by Barrow mayor, Councillor Rory McClure and mayoress Wendy McClure.
Work was recently completed on The Mall, next to Barrow Market.
And councillors hope it will enhance the over all appeal of the town centre, especially to businesses.
Cllr McClure said: “They have done a wonderful job. The Mall is an important part of our history. It has been run down for many years.
“But now hopefully the overall appearance of this and the town centre revamp will entice businesses into the town.
“This is just part of refurbishment of the whole town centre. It is a lovely facility.”
New LED lighting, security gates, and CCTV cameras were installed as part of the work.
Exhibition boxes have also been put into the wall opposite the entrance to the market.
The existing pavement was also ripped up and replaced with light grey granite slabs.
The work was funded by Barrow Regeneration, with capital funding from the Northwest Regional Development Agency and Barrow Borough Council.
Ann Taylforth, town centre and festivals manager for Barrow Borough Council, said: “I think it is absolutely great that we have opened this throughway in the town centre.
“It is a great opportunity for local businesses to rent small shops off the council.
“The level of investment and quality of design complements the new pavement work in the town centre.
“I’m sure everyone will be really surprised at how well some LED lights can transform the area.”
