Furness Business News

Nicola Haigh and Ruth Tickle are graduates of BAE Systems. At the request of Furness Enterprise, they produced a report in April 2007 looking at graduate perceptions of Barrow and the Furness area. This is what they discovered.

To find out what young graduates and professionals think of the area, Ruth and Nicola questioned 50-60 graduates by questionnaire and held a focus group. And the findings were…

  • the majority of graduates expect to stay in the area for more than 5 years
  • 81% of people thought salaries in the area were average or above
  • 83% felt the cost of living in Barrow is good/very good, with affordable house prices. This is a particular attraction for graduates who have student debt and want to get on the housing ladder.
  • 52% of respondents feel that social networks are above average and 86% of graduates confirmed that they socialise regularly with others in their same business. What a sociable bunch!

The key areas that were noted for improvements included a higher calibre of shops, restaurants and bars, more job promotion at Universities and more opportunities for graduates to come together from separate businesses.

The report has been noted and these points are being actioned. Furness Enterprise continues to strengthen links with the University of Lancaster to promote the area to new graduates and has also been supportive in a new graduate group being launched by Sally Broom; the young entrepreneur behind yoursafeplanet.com.

At the same time, Urban regeneration company, West Lakes Renaissance is working on the general regeneration of the area with plans for new buildings, housing and shopping & leisure facilities.

With this work underway, the next report should find that “all” graduates plan to stay in the area for more than 5 years, as compared with a “majority
