Furness is also a great place to set up a new business whether you are a
locally based entrepreneur or one considering moving into South Cumbria. The
following companies are some of the examples of new start success stories in
recent years.
- Jamie Cross, a qualified hairdresser
identified the need for a barbershop in Dalton. With 14-years experience in the
trade he opened the doords fo Jamie Cross Gents Hairdressing on 1 August 2005
with the help of a Barrow and Furness Task Force Enterprise Fund grant of £2,000
creating 2 new jobs.
- Laura Barnett, LMB Design is an
Ulverston-based interior design practice combined with a homewares and giftware
retail showroom. The business began operating in August 2005 after securing
funding from The Ulverston and Low Furness Market Towns Initiative Linkstart and
Regeneration grants. At the time of writing 2 new jobs have been created.
LMB Design provides professional advice to domestic and
commercial customers offering a comprehensive interior design service for all
clients.
- Euan Davidson Chromatechnic Ltd was
started in September 2005, having worked in the electro optic market for 25
years. Euan received a £7,500 Ulverston and Low Furness Market Town Initiative
grant and a £4,000 MTI Marketing grant to assist with the creation of 2
full-time new jobs. Since then the company has created a further part-time job
at its 35, Princess Street, Ulverston base. The company offers application
support for optical sensor design, targeted at achieving cost effective, optimum
performance.
- Christopher Alderson, Steven Hunt and Andrew Sinclair,
Furness Fluid Power Ltd was incorporated in March 2006 after
receiving a package of assistance comprising a new industrial unit owned by
Barrow in Furness Borough Council (one of our key partners) and a Barrow and
Furness Peninsula Task Force Enterprise Fund grant of £15,000. This led to the
creation of 3 new full-time jobs. In September they employed a full-time
Office and Accounts Manager. A further job was created in 2006. The
company, led by Christopher Alderson, Steven Hunt and Andrew Sinclair, provides
hydraulic and pneumatic products and services from Furness Business Park,
Barrow. "FFP" customers are mainly local manufacturing
firms.
- Darren and Lara Napton, Broughton Village
Bakery was launched in April 2006. This traditional bakery and cafe
appeals to both tourists and locals. The products lean heavily towards local and
organic materials. A Barrow and Furness Peninsula Task Force Enterprise
Fund Grant of £14,000 went toward the creation of 7 new full-time jobs and a
£10,000 Furness Challenge Fund Loan helped with the refurbishment of the
premises.
